Located just two hours from Athens, Andros receives more of its tourism from Greeks than any other nationality. This gives the island a wonderfully authentic feel and whilst in the high season there are a number of international tourists visiting this inviting island, Andros has very much kept its traditional character and is a wonderful example of what Greece can offer those who are willing to get off the beaten track. The main town, or Chora, is a collection of pretty white buildings with red tiled roofs sitting by the sea. A pedestrianised cobbled street leads past shops, bars and restaurants to an attractive square where one can sit and enjoy a cold drink and watch the world go by. Cuisine in Andros is largely Greek; of particular note is the family-run Skalakia in Chora whose Mousaka is the best I’ve had. Andros has two main tourist areas: Batsi on the west coast and Korthi on the south-east. Both towns are very picturesque and have a laid back ambience that inspires relaxation. Batsi, the busier of the two, is 7km from the port of Gavrio and is made up of a large sweeping sandy bay surrounded by hotels, restaurants and bars. Korthi is quieter and is made up of three smaller beaches and is a great spot for windsurfing. Andros boasts some very beautiful and often quiet beaches, many of which are located at the end of a long dirt road but are well worth the effort to get to. Andros is a beautiful island that has much to offer those looking for a relaxing break and some traditional Greek culture. The ferry to Andros leaves daily from Rafina on the eastern side of Athens, several times a day in summer.
