With less tourism than nearby Rhodes or Kos, but more than some of its smaller neighbours, Symi is an affluent and picturesque island that offers visitors a relaxing but vibrant break with bars and restaurants of the traditional taverna style as well as some smarter more upmarket establishments. The neoclassical port of Yialos is one of Greece’s most attractive harbours, with handsome houses of white, yellow and red, it’s no wonder that this is Symi’s busiest town, attracting many day-trippers from nearby Rhodes. A short uphill walk from the port is the island capital of Apo Symi or Chorio is where many of the locals live. Here there are some great tavernas and the views over Yialos are a must see. A short walk to the east of Chorio is the small village of Pedi, set in a valley with a pretty, man-made sandy beach (all of the other beaches on the island are pebbles or shingles, which afford incredibly clear waters all round). Other organised beaches include the lovely Agios Nikolaos and Agia Marina, with sunbeds and a taverna and bit of a walk either side of Pedi. There are also small settlements at both Nimborioa and Marathounta, each with its own appealing stretch of beach. Venturing further afield is also rewarding with many smaller secluded beaches only accessible by boat, such as beautiful Nanou, providing a perfect location to while away the day. There are water taxis and round-island trips available for those not lucky enough to have brought their own boat. The exquisite Monastery of Panormitis in the south of the island is of important religious significance and attracts many pilgrimages and is well worth a visit. One can also take day trip to Turkey and soak in some different culture before returning to a relaxing evening in Symi.
