Gentle Folegandros is one of the more quiet Greek islands. With a population of about 650 and only 32 square kilometres, it is also one of the smallest of the inhabited islands. It has three villages, all connected by a paved road: the port of Karavostasis, the capital of Chora and Ano Meria. Chora is just over 3km from the port and is a delightful and particularly authentic village, its centre has three small attractive squares, where one can eat or drink at one of the traditional tavernas, browse at one of the local shops or admire the pretty nearby churches. One can also see the remains of the 13th century Venetian fortress in Chora. If peaceful Chora is still too busy for you, the beautiful village of Ano Meria is just 5 km away and is a reminiscent of Greek life as it was before tourism descended. The two main beaches are Karavostasi, a pebbled beach close to the port, and Agali, a pretty bay on the south west side of the island. These are both accessible by car or by bus from Chora. The island also boasts many other beautiful and secluded beaches, which can be reached by foot or by fishing boat, which may be commissioned from the port. These beaches and are well worth a visit as their remoteness means they can be near deserted and make the perfect place for some peace and quiet. Located in between Milos, Ios and Santorini, Folegandros is accessible by ferry from a number of neighbouring islands and from Athens.
