Lipsi is small and peaceful, so small in fact that you can walk almost anywhere within an hour or two. With the tallest hill just 300m, and a series of footpaths and donkey trails around the relatively undeveloped island, it makes for a good place to explore on foot. Unlike many of its neighbours, the island’s economy is centred around local produce such as thyme honey, wine and cheese, rather than tourism, although in recent years it has become increasingly popular with the yachting crowd, who favour pretty Katsadia beach in the south, for its sheltered bay, wide sandy beach, good local taverna and picturesque views of Leros and Kalymnos. The main settlement in Lipsi is Chora, with a gentle array of waterfront tavernas and ouzeries and a pretty square within a maze of narrow streets, this picturesque little port town is a great place to just chill out and soak up a bit of Greek life. Nearby Leindou beach, which is sandy and clean and popular with the locals, is a good place to cool down during the hot Greek summer months. In the north, a one hour walk from Chora, is the beautiful beach of Platis Yialos, where a sheltered sandy bay gives home to shallow aqua-marine waters and a well-regarded taverna. There is also a bus service and two taxis for those less inclined to walk. Also worth visiting is the lovely 7th century church of Panaghia Tou Harou, whose icon of the Virgin Mary holding Christ on the crucifix is said to perform miracles. Those wishing to explore further afield can take a day trip to the seven smaller islets surrounding Lipsi. There is no airport on the island, but it can be reached by ferry from many of its neighbours.
