Skiathos is the smallest of the Sporades, yet also the most popular with tourists, who tend to stay largely in Skiathos Town, where there is a great selection of lively bars, restaurants, nightclubs, chic shops and good yachting facilities, as well as an open air theatre right by the sea. The island prides itself on being one of Greece’s more cosmopolitan islands and rivals Mykonos for its open-minded attitude. Those preferring something more low-key than the main town can find accommodation at many of the beautiful little towns and villages along south coast. Visitors can entertain themselves on one of the 60+ Beaches, where you can relax and soak up the sunshine with a back drop of lush pine trees, or choose from a selection of watersports on offer. Beaches along the more populous south coast, such as the highly regarded Koukounaries, lively Banana Beach, popular Megali Amos and gentle Troulos, are characterised by long sweeping sandy bays with sunbeds, and tavernas and lovely calm waters. Beaches in the north tend to be quieter and more secluded than those in the south. Highlights include picture-perfect Lalaria, were pebbles meet tall cliffs and access is by sea only, and popular but still relatively peaceful Asselinos and Mandraki. If you want to venture away from the beaten track, you will find a good selection of hiking trails; the Evangelistra Monastery just outside town and the ruins of the old Kastro in the north are also well worth a visit. A good bus service runs the length of the south coast, as do water taxis, and there is a great day trip around the island by boat, which takes in the Kastro and several of the northern beaches. You can also visit nearby islets, Tsougria and Arkos, where beautiful deserted beaches await. Skiathos can be reached by direct flights from many European countries, or by ferry from neighbouring islands or from the mainland.
