Unspoilt Sikinos is one of Greece’s quietest islands and hence makes a fabulous getaway from the tourism that frequents some of the places nearby. Accessible from only a handful of islands, and located just off the coast of Ios, this pretty little isle gives you a taste of the real Greece and makes for a truly peaceful break. With a population of just 300 friendly locals, many of whom speak no English – and have no need to – Sikinos maintains a peaceful charm to complement its natural beauty. The two main settlements are the port of Alopronoia and the town of Kastro or Chora. Alopronoia is a small fishing village which has an attractive beach with sunbeds, umbrellas and a small collection of tavernas and hotels to cater to its minimal tourism. Nightlife here is very traditional and there are no bars or clubs pumping out music to disturb the tranquillity. Kastro is located 4km from the port, on the north side of the island and is accessible by bus. It is a picturesque village dotted on top of a hill overlooking the sea, with a pretty square housing a couple of tavernas, and also a small market and the island’s only ferry ticket office nearby. Life in Sikinos is unhurried as locals go about their gentle lives in the relaxed manor of an unspoilt Mediterranean island. If you are looking for one of the more secluded Greek islands and are keen to steer away from the beaten track, Sikinos may be just the place for you.
