Kea, in the Cyclades, is one of the closest Islands to Athens and as such is quite a popular destination for Athenians, many of them keeping homes here for holidays or weekends. The short ferry ride from the mainland is from Lavrion rather than Piraeus and takes about an hour, disembarking in Kea at the port of Korissia, from where there is a also good ferry service to many other islands in the Cyclades. Most of the nightlife is to be found in Vourkari or Korissia where there is a fine sandy beach. Other popular beaches include Koundouros, Kambi and Pisses, but there are also many beautiful, quieter beaches such as Kalidonychi, Kaliskla and Xyla, which can only be accessed by foot. A famous sight on the island is the Stone Lion Head which is built on a rock outside the village of Ioulis and dates from the 6th century B.C. This is certainly worth a visit. Kea is known as a great place for walking with many interesting tracks and paths and some spectacular views.
