Easily the most cosmopolitan of all the Greek islands, Mykonos is known internationally as the ‘gay’ island. It does indeed offer a very gay-friendly environment and a host of gay bars and clubs, but it also has plenty more to offer besides this. A vibrant and stylish island, Mykonos is extremely popular with tourists and rightly so as it has one of the most exciting club scenes in Greece as well as some truly gorgeous golden sandy beaches. Mykonos Town is the epicentre for the island’s nightlife, with trendy clubs hiring famous DJs and music pumping out until late into the night and revellers enjoying a chic atmosphere rivalled only by Ibiza. Beach parties are also not uncommon in Mykonos where Europe’s hot young things from a plethora of backgrounds can dance til dawn. Aside from the inherent hedonism, Mykonos Town is in fact a very attractive village of winding alleyways and white buildings with brightly coloured doors and woodwork. It includes the lively Little Venice where one can eat, drink, visit an art gallery, take in a fabulous sunset, and party the night away, all at the water’s edge. Outside of Mykonos Town, one may wish to visit the town’s famous old windmills, one of the islands other pretty villages or one of its many stunning beaches. The most popular of these, such as the aptly named Paradise and Super Paradise Beaches, lie to the south of Mykonos Town and can get very crowded during peak season. For a quieter time, one can visit any one of the many beaches in the north of the island such as Panormos or the nudist Fokos. Mykonos can be reached by air into the islands international airport or by ferry from just about any of its neighbouring islands.
