The largest and southernmost of the Sporades, Skyros is also the most remote and least touristy. It is a serenely peaceful place with a wonderful sense of harmony, although even this island does get busy in August. Most of the island’s life is located in the north, where lush pine forests provide a beautiful backdrop to picturesque beaches and quiet villages, with less of interest in the rugged and barren south. Most settlements are between the pretty port town of Linaria on the west coast and the capital of Chora on the east, a Cycladic style village built around the sides of a dramatically steep hill with a Byzantine castle perched on top. At the foot of Chora are the gentle tourist areas of Magazia and Molos, each with a long beach of fine greyish sand and a selection of hotels, tavernas and low-key bars. Aside from the beautiful beaches and warm Greek hospitality that can be found throughout the islands, Skyros is also known for its alternative holidays. The main centre of these is at the pretty, pine tree surrounded bay of Atsitsa where one can find an impressive selection of uplifting courses to nourish the soul, from yoga to creative writing, dance classes to life coaching, which can easily be organised as part of a package through Skyros Holidays. For those looking for something more active, the island is also a great place for windsurfing and sailing due to its wind, and trekking thanks to the north of the island’s lush interior. More easily accessible than some might think, Skyros now has a small domestic airport. It can also be reached from Athens by taking a 2.5 hour bus ride to Kymi and then a 1 hour 40 minute ferry ride to Skyros. There are also ferries from Skiathos and Alonnisos, both around 5-6 hours away.
