An island full of nature, Tilos really is the place to come if you want to get away from it all. Agriculture has played a big part in this Greek island’s history, which has led to a series of trails connecting small communities through lush valleys. These, combined with a plethora of interesting flora and fauna, including over 100 species of birds and 8 species of rare orchids, have made the island a wonderful place for walking and guided treks are available through Tilos Trails in the port town of Livadia. For the less adventurous, there is also a regular bus service connecting Livadia with Megalo Chorio and Eristos Beach. Most of the population live in Livadia, where there are a number of hotels and tavernas to ensure visitors are well looked after. A short walk from here along a scenic coastal path brings one to an attractive sandy and pebbled beach which has all the usual facilities of a town beach. Just outside Livadia is the abandoned village of Mikro Chorio which is an interesting place to visit and is, curiously, home to the island’s only bar which opens its doors during summer months and lights up the little town. Further to the north is Megalo Chorio, where one can visit the medieval castle with a breath-taking view over Eristos. To the east, high up on a hill, is the picturesque monastery of Agios Panteleimonas, a spiritual and peaceful place that is certainly worth a visit. Back along the road, and to the south, is Eristos beach, long sandy and very quiet, there are no facilities here, just lovely beach, beautiful sea and serenity. Other equally quiet beaches are Agia Andonis and Plaka in the north as well as numerous tiny coves that are only accessible by boat. Tilos is 2 hours by ferry from either Kos or Rhodes.
